THE PERFORMANCE

ConteXture danceDETROIT performed “Solace: A Community Healing Project” in the Rosedale and North Rosedale Park neighborhoods on September 2, 2020. "Solace" continues Contexture’s exploration of human emotions as well as Detroit themes, exploring the devastating impact of COVID-19 on the dance community and the two racially and culturally diverse neighborhoods in the city. The performance took place outdoors, following social distancing safeguards, using the Rosedale neighborhood parks with public art as the inspiration and backdrop.

"Solace" was a collaborative effort between creators, dancers and community residents. Residents were active participants in the creative process through the use of a survey and interviews of key individuals within the community; information gathered was used to inform the choreographic process. The dancers drew on this community information as well as their own personal Covid stories as source material for improvisational movement and emotional expression.

The performance was free to residents and, as public service, Contexture raised over $1000 to contribute to the two neighborhood community organizations.

THE ROSEDALE PARK COMMUNITIES

North Rosedale Park Civic Association and the Rosedale Park Improvement Association, both located in Northwest Detroit, are neighborhood groups which foster great city living. They work to preserve and enhance residential life through various programs, including recreation activities for adults and children, advocacy with local governments, social activities that foster neighborliness, and a variety of committees that address other concerns like safety and security, health and wellness, and home ownership issues.

ConteXture Artistic Director Tracy Halloran grew up in these neighborhoods and has fond memories of playing organized soccer and softball, ice skating on the community constructed outdoor rink, marching in parades, attending summer picnics, and seeing Santa and frosting cookies at the annual Christmas Pancake Breakfast.
