ConteXture Dance Detroit is committed to expanding access to the arts in Detroit. In 2022, with financial support from the Michigan Arts & Culture Council, we initiated our Senior Night Out project.
This project targets senior citizens in Northwest Detroit. Our goal is to provide these seniors, who have very limited access to the arts, with access to a theatrical stage performance presented by local Detroit artists. Working with the Service Coordinators at Restoration Towers, Cambridge Towers, Eden Manor, Evangeline Manor, Greenhouse Apartments and Plymouth Square Apartments, we annually bring 75-90 seniors to our annual dance concert. Senior Night Out includes a free concert ticket, bus transportation to and from the Redford Theatre, and a voucher for the concessions stand. We assist attendees disembarking from the busses, greet them at the door with their ticket and the concession voucher, which always results in lots of smiles. Volunteer ushers help any seniors that need assistance getting to their seats, and we have a Physical Therapist on hand to help guests with special needs. Many of the female attendees get all dressed up for this special evening. Service coordinators and the seniors themselves have expressed delight with our Senior Night Out project, and now look forward to this yearly event.
